Scissor Selection Guide

With so many options to choose from, selecting your hairdressing scissors - literally the “tools of your trade” - can be a confusing and daunting process. Many hairdressers spend money on scissors they will never really like working with - and so will hardly ever use!

That’s why Scissorhands UK have put together this Scissor Selection Guide to introduce our simple “1,2,3 Step Approach” to choosing the right scissors for creating the kind of haircuts you want to do... quicker, easier and with more control – every time.

In the UK most stylists have just 1 scissor to do everything – and maybe for gents, to “thin it a bit”.  We think that like other skilled professionals, you deserve the right tools to do the right job

Better Haircutting and Freedom to Create

…is what we believe should be available for all salon professionals. We are proud of what is available and that we tell you everything we can before you buy. You will find convex edge Japanese style blades at Scissorhands UK, not European Bevelled Edge style scissors.

Why?

Convex; are smoother to cut with because everything is hollow ground, curved and smooth.

Smoother and easier to cut with, they cut super sharp lines as well as slice through the hair.

Bevelled Edges; are straight and flat which means they cut like a guillotine. This means that the hair cannot move (or be slice cut!) and is gripped when cut.

Convex; are generally made of high grade steel and are hand finished over a period of 2 -3 weeks.

Bevelled Edges; are generally machine made in 1 day

This is why Convex scissors generally cost more than Bevelled scissors, but we think it`s worth it, and we’re sure you will too.

1. Choosing the Right Handle

The Offset (Comfort) Handle

This scissor handle gives an instant feel of comfort. Its curve will both fit the curve of your grip as well as relax your elbow and shoulder. This will reduce the risk of aches and pains for any stylist.

We only sell Offset handles for this reason.

“The Revolving Thumb” Handle

This rewrites the rulebook on comfort and control. The main benefit ?... freedom of movement. You can drastically reduce wear and tear on the joints and muscles of the ; hand, wrist, arm and neck.
A must have for anyone suffering from repetitive strain or arm and neck pain.

Why Scissorhands UK don't recommend straight handles?

Because straight handles keep your elbow so high, they can cause neck, shoulder and wrist pain as well as obstruct you when cutting hair against the skin.

2. Choosing Your Scissor Blade Length

Scissorhands UK recommends a long AND a short blade for specific cutting techniques.

Short blades (5 inch)

Designed for; small sections, cutting in the nape area and for stylists that prefer precision cutting techniques. Done in the palm of the hand, the small blade fits more easily into small cutting sections. Short blades are not ideal for slice cutting as your fingers are in the hair. Short blades are less stable on the knuckles leading to more cut fingers!

Medium Blades (5.5 inch)

5.5 inch is the “industry standard” size. These are the all round length, but are not specific to any style of cutting. We sell lots of them to people that haven't seen our education.

Longer blades (6 inch +)

For; stylists who cut over the knuckles/fingers, those who slice cut, those who point cut.
WHY?..Because they ; reduce the risk of cutting your fingers, are less obstructive when slice cutting, cut straighter base and layer lines and cut softer point cutting sections.

3. Choosing Your Blade Designs

At Scissorhands UK we only sell convex edges, not bevelled European style edges.   Bevelled edges will only still cut and are designed to grip and not slice

Remember though, ALL CONVEX EDGES WILL CUT STRAIGHT AND SLICE.

Thinning and Blending Scissors 30 Tooth

These are a must for all stylists that need to thin and blend hair.

Our 30 tooth models (Magnus 30,Lumen and Academy Thinner ) all cut with virtually no cut marks in the hair. This allows stylists to cut hair both thinner and shorter without the worry of leaving unwanted lines in the haircut.

Perfect either scissor over comb or cut in your hands for softening fringes, and for blending together sections of hair.

Our customers love them on hair extensions too!

Layering/Texturising Scissors 15 Tooth

Layering

These are a “must have” for all stylists that have been doing (2 haircuts per client) for years.

The 15 Tooth (Carbon, Magnus, Lumen and Novo) are designed to enable you to cut in your layers – length with a soft edge. Yes you can do it in 1 go instead of; cutting the hair wet, blow drying, and then re-cutting it again dry, with the same solid blade scissors. You know…point , point point cut…., chip ,chip chip cut. We say “Do it better and do it in 1 go”. We challenge anyone to layer and texturise better with a solid blade than we can demonstrate cut with a convex 15 tooth. Really we`ll show you.

This is where you can either scissor over comb or hold the hair and cut anywhere from 6 -2 inches from the tips of the section. This creates a beautiful flawless (razor-like ) texture in the hair.

Men's Hair

A combination of Layering/Texturiser and Thinning/Blending scissors works extremely well on both classic and modern methods of men's hair cutting.

Important tip

Cut “still” with the 15 Tooth. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SLICE CUT. The blade will do the slice effect for you.

This is singly the most “salon life changing” breakthrough for the majority of our customers.

If you can ..TRY A PAIR AS SOON AS YOU CAN
